Do you make clean or vegan products?

Yes, we create clean/vegan formulas. But we can custom formulate any cosmetic product that you require.

How much will it cost to develop a custom formula?

Cost will vary depending on claims made and type of product.  We always tell our customers to budget $12,000US.  This will usually cover formulation and testing requirements.

What is the MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) for manufacturing custom formulations?

For Color Products, the MOQ is 500 units per SKU.

We currently have a maximum batch size of 30 kg per SKU.

How long does it take to formulate a new custom formula?

It takes approximately 16-18 weeks of the formulation process to develop an approved sample standard. The approved sample is used for the production run (manufacturing process).

Can you process bulk for cosmetic filling and packaging?

We have bulk cosmetic filling and packing capabilities that encompass glass and plastic jars, bottles.  We can source and pack most types of primary and secondary cosmetic packaging, if needed.

Does JEM Labs manufacture packaging or labeling?

Unfortunately, JEM Labs does not manufacture packaging or labeling. We specialize in the formulation and manufacturing of color cosmetics only.  Our customers can source their own packaging and labels and ship to JEM within 5 weeks of the customer’s manufacturing run.

We do have the capability to source packaging from a quality 3rd party supplier or we can refer you to them as well.

How long does it take to manufacture a new product?

The process can be from 3-6 months for a brand-new product formulation. Raw ingredient sourcing and packaging lead times usually determine the length of the processing time.

What are the processes of creating a custom formulation and color-matching?

Research and Development:

·         Fees regarding Custom Formula development vary depending on the product, claims to be made, and ownership.

·         Benchmarks will be supplied by the customer to give our chemists an idea of the texture and characteristics they are looking to achieve.

·         Before commencing work, the customer must specify the desired functionality that needs to be achieved. The customer must also specify if certain ingredients need to be added or removed from the formula. If this is not stated prior to product development, the lead time and fees may change.

·         The lead time for R&D work depends on many factors: time to evaluate different subjects, stability, and shipping.  It is not unreasonable to take 3-6 months to develop a new formula.

·         R&D samples include 3 iterations. This means that if the formula is not approved and changes need to be made, we will submit new samples for your approval up to three times.  If more than 3 iterations are needed, there is a fee for each subsequent iteration.

·         After receiving submission samples, you must return the lab sample approval form with a signature attached.  If we do color cosmetics, we cannot commence color matching until the base formula is approved.

·         No further changes can be made once the sample is approved. Any additional changes made to the already approved lab sample will be considered a new formulation and require an additional R&D development fee.

Color-Matching:

·         A $400.00 fee is charged per custom color shade.

·         The customer must supply a sample of the desired color. Color is subjective, and we cannot go by pictures on a computer screen, as all screens have different resolutions.

·         The lead time to color match is 4-6 weeks after receiving color standard (If more than 10 shades need to be matched, the lead time could extend up to 12 weeks.)

·         Color matching fee includes up to 3 iterations of customization. This means that if the formula is not approved and changes need to be made, we will submit new samples for your approval three times.

·         Our lab evaluates color on skin and draw down / Leneta paper. When receiving lab samples, we ask our customers to evaluate the color on your skin and Leneta paper to best see if the desired color and opacity were achieved.

·         Once samples are received, you must return the approval sheet included with the samples. If samples are not approved, please specify in detail what changes need to be made. If samples are approved, your signature is required at the bottom of the approval sheet with the date.

·         No further changes can be made once the sample is approved. Any additional changes made to the color of the already approved lab sample will be considered a new color and require an additional color matching fee.
